Over time DCA limits its own metabolism via the MAAI pathway. For this reason it is recommended to take regular time off DCA, allowing the drug and  metabolites to clear the blood plasma. Time off also helps minimize peripheral neuropathy. Higher doses will require longer intervals off the drug.
